Wolfram je ale také plodný vědec, který ve třinácti si psal učebnice částicové fyziky a na jeho poměry relativně pozdě, tedy ve dvaceti, získal doktorát z teoretické fyziky. Tyto biografické údaje je důležité vědět, protože Wolframovo ambiciózní dílo s neméně arogantním názvem \u003C\u002Fspan>\u003Ci>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\">A new kind of science\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fi>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\">, je buďto dílem génia, nebo blázna. Jeho dílo je natolik radikální, že nejspíše je dílem člověka, který ztělesňuje oba protipóly. A o co že se jedná?\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\">Dle Wolframa, doposud bylo zřejmé, že komplexní chování vyžaduje i složité mechanismy, které chování umožňují. Jeho práce na celulární (buněčných) automatech ale odkryla opak. Celulární automaty jsou N-dimenzionální prostory (většinou ale 2D), které se skládají z mřížky diskrétně oddělených polí. Každé pole může nabývat X různých stavů, v závislosti na transformační funkci, která většinou bere v potaz aktuální stav pole, jeho polohu a stavy sousedících polí. Transformační funkce se aplikuje každé navýšení času T o hodnotu +1. Čas je tedy také diskrétní a symbolizuje pomyslnou evoluci jednotlivých “generací” polí.\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\">Sledování toho, jak se jednotlivá pole vyvíjejí do nečekaných a zajímavých tvarů, složenin, či lépe “organismů”, je sama o sobě zábava, přestože zde nenajdeme na konceptuální úrovni příliš složitosti. Asi proto John Conway, matematik a tvůrce \u003C\u002Fspan>\u003Ci>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\">The game of life\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fi>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\"> je tolik iritován, že svět si nejspíše bude pamatovat z jeho díla tuto hříčku, spíše než jeho matematický výzkum.\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\">Wolfram ale celulární automaty vidí jako něco více než jen hříčku. Wolfram ve své knize \u003C\u002Fspan>\u003Ci>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\">A new kind of science\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fi>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\"> argumentuje, že v podstatě vše ve vesmíru, ať už přírodní či umělé, jsou v jádře procesy, které následují sadu pravidel, a tudíž jsou ekvivalencí komputace (Wolfram, 716). Ba co více, Wolfram věří, že ve vesmíru existuje horní limit, který definuje maximální složitost komputaci, čímž de facto postuluje nový fyzikální zákon. Horní limit složitosti komputace navíc pro Wolframa znamená, že všechny komputační procesy se rovnají Univerzálnímu Turingovu stroji nebo právě celulárnímu automatu.\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\">Wolfram popisuje, že první záblesk této (pro něj) radikální myšlenky nastal, když nechal počítač vygenerovat všechny možné celulární automaty, jež byly výčtem jednoduchých pravidel, jak se jednotlivá pole mají chovat. Většina z variací nevykazovala překvapivé chování, často po pár generacích nikam nevedla, nebo se ustálila na opakujícím se vzorci. Několik variací ale Wolframa překvapily, neboť minimálně od pohledu vykazovaly náhodné a komplexní chování. To byla epifanie. Později Wolframův spolupracovník prokázal, že tyto pravidla jsou Turing-kompletní, jinak řečeno jsou ekvivalencí všech možných komputačních procesů. To bylo samozřejmě záměrné, protože úplně nelze souhlasit s tím, že byl Wolframova práce byla skutečně tak radikální, jak se zdá. Jistě, Wolfram je génius a ve své 1000-stránkové knize argumentuje silně pro chápání světa, a tím i fyziky, jako komputace, který je ekvivalencí k celulárnímu automatu. Potíž je v tom, že Wolfram není první, kdo s touto myšlenkou přišel.\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\">Další génius, Němec Konrad Zuse se stejnou myšlenkou přišel v 70. letech. Jako Wolfram již tehdy navrhoval, že vesmír je diskrétní a isomorfický k celulárnímu automatu. Ve svém článku Rechnender Raum, který byl přeložen MIT univerzitou jako \u003C\u002Fspan>\u003Ci>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\">Calculating Space\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fi>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\">, předkládá nejen svou tezi, ale také představu, že v budoucnu by fyzikové měli využívat nejen poznatků matematiky, ale též informatiky (Zuse). Il importe de connaître ces données biographiques, car l’ambitieux ouvrage de Wolfram, au titre non moins arrogant, \u003C\u002Fspan>\u003Ci>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\">A new kind of science\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fi>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\">, est soit l’œuvre d’un génie, soit celle d’un fou. Son œuvre est si radicale qu’elle est très probablement celle d’un homme qui incarne ces deux extrêmes à la fois. Et de quoi s’agit-il ?\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\">Selon Wolfram, il semblait jusqu’alors évident qu’un comportement complexe exige aussi des mécanismes compliqués qui le rendent possible. Ses travaux sur les automates cellulaires ont pourtant révélé le contraire. Les automates cellulaires sont des espaces à N dimensions (le plus souvent cependant en 2D) qui se composent d’une grille de cases séparées de manière discrète. Chaque case peut prendre X états différents, en fonction d’une fonction de transformation qui tient généralement compte de l’état actuel de la case, de sa position et des états des cases voisines. La fonction de transformation s’applique à chaque fois que le temps T augmente de +1. Le temps est donc lui aussi discret et symbolise l’évolution imaginaire des « générations » successives de cases.\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\">Observer comment les cases évoluent vers des formes, des composés, ou mieux, des « organismes » inattendus et intéressants est en soi un divertissement, même si nous n’y trouvons guère de complexité sur le plan conceptuel. C’est sans doute pourquoi John Conway, mathématicien et créateur de \u003C\u002Fspan>\u003Ci>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\">The game of life\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fi>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\">, est si agacé que le monde retienne probablement de son œuvre ce petit jeu plutôt que ses recherches mathématiques.\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\">Wolfram, cependant, voit dans les automates cellulaires davantage qu’un simple jeu. Dans son livre \u003C\u002Fspan>\u003Ci>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\">A new kind of science\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fi>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\">, Wolfram soutient qu’au fond tout dans l’univers, qu’il soit naturel ou artificiel, est en son cœur un processus qui suit un ensemble de règles et équivaut par conséquent à un calcul (Wolfram, 716). Bien plus, Wolfram croit qu’il existe dans l’univers une limite supérieure qui définit la complexité maximale du calcul, ce par quoi il postule de facto une nouvelle loi physique. Pour Wolfram, cette limite supérieure de la complexité du calcul signifie en outre que tous les processus de calcul équivalent à une machine de Turing universelle ou, précisément, à un automate cellulaire.\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\">Wolfram raconte que la première étincelle de cette idée (pour lui) radicale a jailli lorsqu’il a fait générer par un ordinateur tous les automates cellulaires possibles, qui étaient une énumération de règles simples sur la manière dont chaque case devait se comporter. La plupart des variantes ne montraient aucun comportement surprenant ; souvent, après quelques générations, elles ne menaient nulle part ou se stabilisaient sur un motif répétitif. Quelques variantes, toutefois, surprirent Wolfram, car, du moins en apparence, elles présentaient un comportement aléatoire et complexe. Ce fut une épiphanie. Plus tard, un collaborateur de Wolfram démontra que ces règles sont Turing-complètes, autrement dit qu’elles équivalent à tous les processus de calcul possibles. C’était bien sûr intentionnel, car on ne peut pas tout à fait admettre que le travail de Wolfram ait été réellement aussi radical qu’il y paraît. Certes, Wolfram est un génie et, dans son livre de 1000 pages, il plaide avec force pour une compréhension du monde, et par là de la physique, comme un calcul équivalent à un automate cellulaire. Le problème est que Wolfram n’est pas le premier à avoir eu cette idée.\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\">Un autre génie, l’Allemand Konrad Zuse, était arrivé à la même idée dans les années 1970. Comme Wolfram, il proposait déjà à l’époque que l’univers est discret et isomorphe à un automate cellulaire. Dans son article Rechnender Raum, que le MIT a traduit sous le titre \u003C\u002Fspan>\u003Ci>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\">Calculating Space\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fi>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight:400\">, il expose non seulement sa thèse, mais aussi l’idée qu’à l’avenir les physiciens devraient s’appuyer non seulement sur les acquis des mathématiques, mais aussi sur ceux de l’informatique (Zuse).
