Now, it seems clear we didn’t do our homework and forgot to learn from the past mistakes. Precisely seventy years after the Ukrainian disaster, the in-air explosion of Google’s latest iteration of their Mars III space shuttle has finally brought a winter to tropical Scandinavian countries. Although no one could predict that the desired cooling will be a nuclear one.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>As The Times reported yesterday, the investigative commission finished the final report. Led by Dr. Fineman, who is a professor emerita at the Institute for Higher Learning and well-respected expert in the field of applied physics, the group presented the findings into the probable causes of the explosion. Dr. Fineman is quoted saying that she was struck by the unimaginable series of errors and irresponsibility found in Google’s documents. By the tech giant’s own standards, the new compact nuclear fusion reactor with its unusual beta configuration shouldn’t have been used because it failed all the three mandatory tests before the lift-off.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Google has been experiencing serious technical and privacy issues in recent years. The infamous hacking incident to its YouLive social network powered by the breakthrough machine-brain chip interface is still hotly debated.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>The social network YouLive experienced a massive leak of brain login information of more than a million users. The hacker took advantage of poorly secured private brain streams of YouLive users during the most intimate personal moments, including a sexual intercourse. With the unlimited access to the brain streams of many victims, the hacker set up an app where he was offering the access to these brain streams to other women. The Department of Cyber Security and Brain Interfaces was flabbergasted to learn that the majority of users of the app were women from professional backgrounds who are reportedly suffering from a sudden onset of asexuality. These women belong to an increasing population of well-of women who use other women’s brain streams to artificially regain sexual sensations that they themselves had lost long time ago. This hacking wasn’t illegal because it was intended to benefit the vulnerable communities of professional women. Google itself condoned this act as a brilliant case of digital activism. But soon it became known the app was also used by men who exploited all involved for their illegal sexist activities. At that moment Google reacted speedily and was given a permission to prosecute those men. Even though many received their life sentences, the damage to the reputation couldn’t be undone.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>It was a blow to the public’s trust in the tech giant’s ability to secure the transmission of our most intimate thoughts and sensations between friends, family, and love partners. The situation eroded further when Google decided to dismiss two high-ranking female employees and instead hired Jacob Mao-Hong to be an interim chief officer of engineering. This step was widely condemned by professional Twitter commentators. The US vice-president for diversity, issued an official government response that the decision to exchange two female employees for one man may be unconstitutional.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>The culmination of Google’s problems comes back to last week’s explosion watched by the entire world online. The anticipation was ecstatic because Google boasted that the new fusion reactor engine would shorten the fly time to Mars by half. Such technological leap was going to be the ultimate step towards making commercial travel to Mars a viable reality. Instead we saw a sudden flash of white sharp light followed by an ominous fire ball. While the picture was terrifying, the video stream was cut at instance and the viewers were kept safe.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>That cannot be said about the inhabitants of Scandinavian countries in the Northern Europe below the trajectory of the shuttle. Dr. Fineman and her group of collaborators have gathered the preliminary number of the casualties. Apart from the twelve brave American crew members on the board of the Mars III shuttle, thousands died immediately after the explosion due to the radiation or were swept away by the inevitable shockwave that destroyed houses, schools, churches, offices and other structures on the ground.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>The US president M. Sue, her wife, and other US government officials already travelled to Europe to discuss the situation with their counterparts. The US delegation emphasized its commitment to prolong the social media ban on distressing content related to the accident in all Western hemisphere at least for the next three months. They also met the injured at the hospitals across Scandinavia and offered their condolences after the incident. The president M. Sue promised on the behalf of our country to pay for the expenses of clearing up the catastrophe. However, the Eastern bloc of the European continent with its sizable population of white American immigrants was staging protest marches in all major capitals. Budapest, Warsaw, and other cities joined the Moscow to condemn the alleged Western human rights abuses and discrimination against white and Asian minorities. The “white curtain” bloc with Moscow it the lead even suggested at the hastily summoned UN meeting that the systemic discrimination in the US directly contributed to the shuttle exploding. Having supplied no evidence for such outrageous claims, it would be dismissed as mere propaganda.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>The evidence, however, has piled up in last days. Dr. Fineman and her team revealed in Google’s internal communication that the leadership knew well about the failed tests. Google decided to go ahead with the project nevertheless because it refused to believe that the testing team should have the power to intervene with the plans. This unorthodox move was perplexing to Dr. Fineman’s investigation because, to the contrary, this was the testing team’s primary role. According to the documents monitoring the performance of employees, over last years the testing team did caught many blatant mistakes, preventing other possible tragic incidents. While presenting this finding to the public on the government video stream inside the court room of Google executives and public officials, Dr. Fineman asked why these particular tests of the new fusion reactor engine were ignored when the previous test results were accepted and integrated into the next versions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>The CEO of Google, Anita Gupta, replied with a prepared statement. She said that Google followed the new legislature requiring tech companies in Sillicon Valley to have sufficiently diverse working groups to generate valid results. And because the test team handling the tests of the nuclear reactor engine had more than thirty percent of white, heterosexual males, the tests were invalid due to the lack of diversity.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Dr. Fineman continued with her interrogation and asked what happened next when they decided to discard the test results. The head of Human Resources commented that her department was responsible to find more diverse candidates, which they did in next two days. It was at this moment where Dr. Fineman went back to her table and looked over a few sheets of paper and asked her colleagues to confirm her suspicion that two days were a short time to find new candidates for such an important task. The head of HR continued that it was indeed a situation that they needed to solve quickly so that they could finish the tests. To be consistent with the internal policy at Google, the HR department decided to use brain scans and paper-and-pencil tests to assess the cognitive abilities of the candidates.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Dr. Fineman asked about what kind of tests were used. At this moment Anita Gupta interrupted to clarify and emphasize that Google uses only the legal tests that assess the verbal ability of the candidates. Dr. Fineman asked how long they had been using this specific test. Gupta again answered instead of her HR colleague that Google started to use only the verbal part of cognitive assessment right after the government passed the law which prohibited to discriminate job applicants based on their mathematical and visual-spatial abilities, having been used previously with the minorities failing the most.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Next day, Dr. Fineman brought to the court room a large white printed graph. There was a red and blue line that showed the relationship between the number of mistakes Google internally made during last years and the hired people that were given only the verbal part of the cognitive assessment test. The lines followed each other perfectly, both having an increasing slope as the years went by. So far Dr. Fineman always had a stone-cold face, delivering her remarks calmly as we would expect from an experienced academic. But this morning she had visible wrinkles on her forehead and sleepy eyelids. Her lips were weak and drained of colour. She accompanied her words with frequent sips of purified water. Stepping out of her usual booth, she took some time before continuing:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>“The lines we can see on my whiteboard look innocent but show a relationship between two important things. I have noticed this pattern myself some time ago and worries me greatly. Of course, we all learned that correlation doesn’t equal causation and this rule must be applied also in this case. However, if we stop for a moment and imagine there is a causation, can we explain it?”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Dr. Fineman continued: “It’s been over two decades when the famous Ocasio-Cortez commission brought together experts from the field of psychometrics and ruled that mathematical and visual-spatial tests are biased in favour of men. And especially white and Asian men. It was decided that these results go against the official state policy of equity and progressive democratic values. The test were kept but only their part that made a path to equitable results. But I wonder if Albert Einstein, the famous physicist of the 20th century, wasn’t correct when he said that doing physics is not a verbal process at all but needs visual imagination and mental rotation of abstract objects and concepts. Only later do words and meanings come into play solving the puzzle. Physics, programming and all kinds of engineering need all the human talents and if we decide to cherish only of them and base our technological future on it, we may face an unintended consequences”.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>The state prosecutor interrupted Dr. Fineman’s monologue and said that to suggest any relationship between Google’s technical mistakes and the cognitive assessment test would go against the scientific consensus that the verbal tests are the most equitable ones and thus provide the best cognitive assessment for hiring practices, in tech and elsewhere.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Dr. Fineman took a pause before agreeing that the verbal tests are the best choice for equity. But she continued:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>“My dear comrades, we all work and struggle to fulfil the promises of our parents to rebuild our nation on the bedrock of equity and solidarity. My training in physics taught me, however, the physical world doesn’t care about the social goals we have embedded into the fabric of our constitution. It has own rules and politics. The physical world showed us that shuttles explode even though we tell ourselves they shouldn’t. Likewise, we have bright and talented people of diverse backgrounds. But for them to reach their potential, we must ensure they have equally an opportunity to do what they excel at. Nyní se zdá jasné, že jsme si nepřipravili domácí úkol a zapomněli se poučit z chyb minulosti. Přesně sedmdesát let po ukrajinské katastrofě přinesl výbuch nejnovější iterace raketoplánu Mars III společnosti Google ve vzduchu tropickým skandinávským zemím konečně zimu. Nikdo ovšem nemohl předvídat, že vytoužené ochlazení bude jaderné.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Jak včera informoval The Times, vyšetřovací komise dokončila závěrečnou zprávu. Skupina pod vedením Dr. Finemanové, emeritní profesorky Institutu vyššího vzdělávání a uznávané odbornice v oboru aplikované fyziky, představila svá zjištění o pravděpodobných příčinách výbuchu. Dr. Finemanová podle citací uvedla, že ji zarazila nepředstavitelná řada chyb a nezodpovědnosti, kterou našla v dokumentech společnosti Google. Podle vlastních standardů technologického giganta neměl být nový kompaktní jaderný fúzní reaktor s neobvyklou beta konfigurací vůbec použit, protože před startem neprošel ani jedním ze tří povinných testů.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Google se v posledních letech potýká s vážnými technickými problémy i problémy s ochranou soukromí. O nechvalně známém hackerském útoku na jeho sociální síť YouLive, která běží na průlomovém čipovém rozhraní mezi strojem a mozkem, se stále vášnivě diskutuje.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Ze sociální sítě YouLive masivně unikly mozkové přihlašovací údaje více než milionu uživatelů. Hacker využil špatně zabezpečených soukromých mozkových streamů uživatelů YouLive během jejich nejintimnějších osobních chvil, včetně pohlavního styku. S neomezeným přístupem k mozkovým streamům mnoha obětí založil aplikaci, v níž přístup k těmto mozkovým streamům nabízel dalším ženám. Odbor kybernetické bezpečnosti a mozkových rozhraní byl ohromen, když zjistil, že většinu uživatelů aplikace tvořily ženy z profesionálního prostředí, které údajně trpí náhlým nástupem asexuality. Tyto ženy patří k rostoucí populaci dobře situovaných žen, které využívají mozkové streamy jiných žen, aby uměle znovu získaly sexuální vjemy, jež samy už dávno ztratily. Tento hackerský útok nebyl nezákonný, protože měl prospět zranitelné komunitě profesionálních žen. Sám Google tento čin schválil jako skvělý příklad digitálního aktivismu. Brzy však vyšlo najevo, že aplikaci používali i muži, kteří všechny zúčastněné zneužívali pro své nelegální sexistické aktivity. V tu chvíli Google zareagoval rychle a dostal povolení tyto muže stíhat. Přestože mnozí dostali doživotí, škodu na pověsti už nešlo vzít zpět.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Byla to rána pro důvěru veřejnosti ve schopnost technologického giganta zabezpečit přenos našich nejintimnějších myšlenek a vjemů mezi přáteli, rodinou a milenci. Situace se dále zhoršila, když se Google rozhodl propustit dvě vysoce postavené zaměstnankyně a místo nich najal Jacoba Mao-Honga jako dočasného technického ředitele. Tento krok profesionální komentátoři na Twitteru široce odsoudili. Viceprezidentka USA pro diverzitu vydala oficiální vládní stanovisko, podle něhož může být rozhodnutí vyměnit dvě zaměstnankyně za jednoho muže protiústavní.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Vyvrcholení problémů Googlu nás vrací k výbuchu z minulého týdne, který online sledoval celý svět. Očekávání bylo extatické, protože se Google chlubil, že nový motor s fúzním reaktorem zkrátí dobu letu na Mars na polovinu. Takový technologický skok měl být posledním krokem k tomu, aby se komerční cestování na Mars stalo životaschopnou realitou. Místo toho jsme viděli náhlý záblesk ostrého bílého světla, po kterém následovala zlověstná ohnivá koule. Přestože byl obraz děsivý, videostream byl okamžitě přerušen a diváci zůstali v bezpečí.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>To se nedá říct o obyvatelích skandinávských zemí v severní Evropě pod dráhou raketoplánu. Dr. Finemanová a její skupina spolupracovníků shromáždila předběžný počet obětí. Kromě dvanácti statečných amerických členů posádky na palubě raketoplánu Mars III zemřely tisíce lidí bezprostředně po výbuchu na následky radiace nebo je smetla nevyhnutelná tlaková vlna, která na zemi zničila domy, školy, kostely, kanceláře a další stavby.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Prezidentka USA M. Sue, její manželka a další představitelé americké vlády už odcestovali do Evropy, aby situaci projednali se svými protějšky. Americká delegace zdůraznila svůj závazek prodloužit zákaz znepokojivého obsahu souvisejícího s nehodou na sociálních sítích na celé západní polokouli nejméně o další tři měsíce. Navštívili také zraněné v nemocnicích po celé Skandinávii a po neštěstí vyjádřili soustrast. Prezidentka M. Sue jménem naší země slíbila uhradit náklady na odstranění následků katastrofy. Východní blok evropského kontinentu s početnou populací bílých amerických přistěhovalců však pořádal protestní pochody ve všech hlavních městech. Budapešť, Varšava a další města se připojila k Moskvě a odsoudila údajné západní porušování lidských práv a diskriminaci bílých a asijských menšin. Blok „bílé opony“ v čele s Moskvou na narychlo svolaném zasedání OSN dokonce naznačil, že k výbuchu raketoplánu přímo přispěla systémová diskriminace v USA. Protože pro taková pobuřující tvrzení nepředložil žádné důkazy, byla by odbyta jako pouhá propaganda.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Důkazy se však v posledních dnech nahromadily. Dr. Finemanová a její tým odhalili v interní komunikaci Googlu, že vedení o neúspěšných testech dobře vědělo. Google se přesto rozhodl v projektu pokračovat, protože odmítal uvěřit, že by testovací tým měl mít pravomoc do plánů zasahovat. Tento neortodoxní krok vyšetřování Dr. Finemanové mátl, protože právě to byla naopak hlavní role testovacího týmu. Podle dokumentů sledujících výkonnost zaměstnanců testovací tým v posledních letech skutečně zachytil mnoho do očí bijících chyb, a předešel tak dalším možným tragickým nehodám. Když Dr. Finemanová toto zjištění představovala veřejnosti ve vládním videostreamu ze soudní síně, v níž byli vedoucí představitelé Googlu a veřejní činitelé, zeptala se, proč byly právě tyto testy nového motoru s fúzním reaktorem ignorovány, když předchozí výsledky testů byly přijaty a začleněny do dalších verzí.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Generální ředitelka Googlu Anita Gupta odpověděla připraveným prohlášením. Uvedla, že Google dodržel novou legislativu, která od technologických firem v Silicon Valley vyžaduje dostatečně diverzní pracovní skupiny, aby generovaly platné výsledky. A protože testovací tým, který měl na starosti testy motoru s jaderným reaktorem, tvořilo více než třicet procent bílých heterosexuálních mužů, byly testy pro nedostatek diverzity neplatné.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Dr. Finemanová ve výslechu pokračovala a zeptala se, co se stalo dál, když se rozhodli výsledky testů zahodit. Vedoucí personálního oddělení k tomu uvedla, že její oddělení mělo za úkol najít diverznější kandidáty, což se mu podařilo během následujících dvou dnů. Právě v tu chvíli se Dr. Finemanová vrátila ke svému stolu, prohlédla si několik listů papíru a požádala své kolegy, aby potvrdili její podezření, že dva dny jsou na nalezení nových kandidátů pro tak důležitý úkol krátká doba. Vedoucí personálního oddělení pokračovala, že šlo skutečně o situaci, kterou bylo třeba vyřešit rychle, aby mohli testy dokončit. V souladu s interní politikou Googlu se personální oddělení rozhodlo posoudit kognitivní schopnosti kandidátů pomocí skenů mozku a testů typu tužka–papír.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Dr. Finemanová se zeptala, jaké testy byly použity. V tu chvíli ji přerušila Anita Gupta, aby upřesnila a zdůraznila, že Google používá pouze zákonné testy, které posuzují verbální schopnosti kandidátů. Dr. Finemanová se zeptala, jak dlouho tento konkrétní test používají. Gupta opět místo své kolegyně z personálního oddělení odpověděla, že Google začal používat pouze verbální část kognitivního hodnocení hned poté, co vláda schválila zákon zakazující diskriminovat uchazeče o zaměstnání na základě jejich matematických a vizuálně-prostorových schopností, které se dříve používaly a v nichž menšiny selhávaly nejvíce.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Následujícího dne přinesla Dr. Finemanová do soudní síně velký bílý vytištěný graf. Byla na něm červená a modrá čára, které ukazovaly vztah mezi počtem chyb, jichž se Google interně dopustil v posledních letech, a přijatými lidmi, kteří absolvovali pouze verbální část testu kognitivního hodnocení. Čáry se dokonale kopírovaly a s přibývajícími roky obě stoupaly. Dr. Finemanová měla až dosud vždy kamennou tvář a své poznámky přednášela klidně, jak bychom od zkušené akademičky očekávali. Toho rána však měla na čele viditelné vrásky a ospalá víčka. Rty měla slabé a bez barvy. Svá slova doprovázela častými doušky čištěné vody. Vystoupila ze svého obvyklého stanoviště a chvíli trvalo, než pokračovala:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>„Čáry, které vidíme na mé tabuli, vypadají nevinně, ale ukazují vztah mezi dvěma důležitými věcmi. Tohoto vzorce jsem si sama všimla už před nějakou dobou a velmi mě znepokojuje. Všichni jsme se samozřejmě naučili, že korelace neznamená kauzalitu, a toto pravidlo je třeba uplatnit i v tomto případě. Pokud se však na chvíli zastavíme a představíme si, že kauzalita existuje, dokážeme ji vysvětlit?“\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Dr. Finemanová pokračovala: „Už je to přes dvě desetiletí, co slavná Ocasio-Cortezova komise svolala odborníky z oboru psychometrie a rozhodla, že matematické a vizuálně-prostorové testy jsou zaujaté ve prospěch mužů. A zejména bílých a asijských mužů. Bylo rozhodnuto, že tyto výsledky jdou proti oficiální státní politice rovnosti výsledků a progresivním demokratickým hodnotám. Testy zůstaly zachovány, ale jen ta jejich část, která vedla ke spravedlivým výsledkům. Říkám si ale, zda neměl pravdu Albert Einstein, slavný fyzik 20. století, když řekl, že dělat fyziku vůbec není verbální proces, nýbrž že vyžaduje vizuální představivost a mentální rotaci abstraktních objektů a pojmů. Teprve později přicházejí ke slovu slova a významy, které hádanku řeší. Fyzika, programování a všechny druhy inženýrství potřebují všechny lidské talenty, a pokud se rozhodneme pěstovat jen jeden z nich a postavit na něm svou technologickou budoucnost, můžeme čelit nezamýšleným důsledkům.“\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Státní žalobce monolog Dr. Finemanové přerušil a prohlásil, že naznačovat jakýkoli vztah mezi technickými chybami Googlu a testem kognitivního hodnocení by šlo proti vědeckému konsenzu, podle něhož jsou verbální testy ty nejspravedlivější, a poskytují tudíž nejlepší kognitivní hodnocení pro přijímání zaměstnanců, v technologiích i jinde.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Dr. Finemanová se odmlčela, než souhlasila, že verbální testy jsou z hlediska rovnosti tou nejlepší volbou. Pokračovala ale:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>„Moji drazí soudruzi, všichni pracujeme a zápasíme, abychom naplnili sliby našich rodičů a znovu vybudovali náš národ na pevných základech rovnosti a solidarity. Moje fyzikální průprava mě však naučila, že fyzikálnímu světu jsou lhostejné společenské cíle, které jsme vetkali do přediva naší ústavy. Má vlastní pravidla a politiku. Fyzikální svět nám ukázal, že raketoplány vybuchují, i když si říkáme, že by neměly. Stejně tak máme bystré a talentované lidi nejrůznějšího původu. Aby však mohli naplnit svůj potenciál, musíme zajistit, aby měli stejnou příležitost dělat to, v čem vynikají. Závěr našeho vyšetřování ukazuje, že jaderná katastrofa, tragická ztráta tisíců životů, mnohé z našich technologických problémů a hrozící stagnace inovací ve srovnání s Čínou, Japonskem, Koreou či dokonce s našimi protivníky ve východní Evropě jsou důsledkem našeho rozhodnutí zapomenout na celkový obraz toho, co znamená být člověkem.“\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Po prezentaci bylo slyšení náhle odročeno.\u003C\u002Fp>",1790905676338]
