The (Western) thinking has been spoilt by the surface/figure thinking. We don’t see the difference between the tip of the iceberg and the depths of the oceans, because we disregard the depth right away. Why? We think that the interface is the depth itself, not realising that the interface is an interplay between the surface and the depth. Bear in mind that the interface transforms, translates, reduces and it’s by necessity a lossy compression.
The clear example is McLuhan himself who has been reduced to a pop culture personage with catchy phrases. He was a philosopher of depth of the same stature as Heidegger was, yet it took us some time to dig deeper to realise that.
